“If music be the food of love, play on.” This quote from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night couldn’t be more fitting to write on a cake made last year for my son who plays the piano. I used a 9 x 13 pan to bake this cake using Barefoot Contessa’s chocolate cake recipe, only I used 1 ½ times the original recipe to make a double layer. The frosting is also from the same chocolate recipe x 2. Both the cake and frosting recipes are what I used for the 2012 Cake, just make sure to increase the proportions of the ingredients, which for the cake is x 1.5 and the frosting is x 2.
The cake comes out really moist and very soft so it would be best, once cooled, to freeze the cake to make it sturdier and minimize crumbs.
The writing and musical notes are made from melted white chocolate piped from an icing bag using a narrow tip. Just pipe designs on a sheet of waxed or parchment paper, then place the sheet in the freezer. The designs will set in just a few minutes and will be ready to use right away, or keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to use them.
